WW2 Heavy Anti-Aircraft Battery

High Mathernock, Scotland

Johnny Graham
By Johnny Graham

The guns are long gone and silent,

Located near High Mathernock Farm and nestled in the countryside between Kilmacolm and Port Glasgow

The site has 4 prominent placements for the guns still remaining plus the command post. At the other side of the road there is the foundations of a large accommodation camp, we gave filming it a miss as it was hard to make out under the summer growth.

"Mathernock Farm - there were heavy Ak Ak guns there - 4 heavies. Got out of school to go potato howkin, the alarm went on Matternock - sirens went in village - Jock Crawford was farmer - "get below the cairts" - a reconnaissance plane came over - couple of the guns fired - they could feel the blast."
