The pendulum has swung and the doldrums have been left behind and slowly but surely momentum is growing and the long learned habits of pessimism and die hard cynicism of all things Paisley related is becoming a distant memory There is projects galore in town, mostly due to the influence of the Paisley 2021 BID for UK City of Culture 2021. Many of these projects are on the horizon, but some have already graced the streets and lanes of Paisley with a very vibrant visible presence.
One such place is Brown's Lane. Partly cobbled and nestled in-between Shuttle Street & Causeyside Street. It's a one way street that despite its charm and old world appeal served mostly as a shortcut and a business location for the few who used it.
That was until the summer of 2017 when a community group of local residents and business owners set out to regenerate the area.
Street artists Danny McDermott & Mark Worst where brought in and Brown's Lane quickly underwent a transformation and a host of Paisley Greats appeared on the Lane's walls: Stealers Wheel Gerry Rafferty & Joe Egan, the cup-winning St Mirren Team of '87, singer Paolo Nutini and local historian Ellen Farmer. Add to the mix: Jimmi Hendrix, John Lennon and Billy Connolly among others.
Brown's Lane was now somewhere it was hard to ignore even if you where using it as a shortcut. If you visit it rewards you taking your time and enjoying the moment and it makes a great subject to photograph(especially if you are a St Mirren fan like me!).
There is other street art murals in town, they are excellent but the joy of Brown's Lane is its packed with art and its just that tiny bit off the beaten track and that makes it one of Paisley's Hidden Gems for me.
Don't take my word for it though go and see for yourself.
