Paisley has a storied past and her skyline is a window into that history,
Her heart in Paisley Abbey dates back to 1163 and despite many additions to in the intervening years many of the Abbey's ancient features remain and are deeply intertwined in the storied histories of the likes of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. The Abbey though is but one of many beautiful buildings in Paisley's picturesque skyline that stretch from her distant past to her thread mills and weavers legacy giving her skyline as rich a tapestry as any shawl from her weavers and there is a good choice of places to take these sights in
One of my personal favourite spots and one that many forget in their rush to race to the lofty heights of the Robertson Braes carpark in the sky is a mere hop and a skip from the town-centre is Saucelhill Park. It is a prominent spacious hilltop and has clean vantages of Paisley and surrounding areas. It's a few minutes walk from Paisley Canal Street Station and in terms of being a hill it's a gentle stroll to take in though you do have to get on the grass if you want to take in her top. I have visited the park on many different occasions to watch the seasons change and for the occasional busy view of the nearby Paisley Fireworks Display and even just to soak in the night sky over the town. Yet it is the sight of her many buildings that draws my eye and has me walking up Saucelhill with my camera.
Paisley is rich in architecture and the aforementioned beautiful buildings fill her skyline and they are many: Thomas Coats Memorial Church, Coats Observatory, John Neilson Institution, Paisley Town Hall, Oakshaw Church and the Paisley Mills to name but only a few. There is literally an absolute plethora of churches, too many to name and every street or community had their own clock towers many of which remain and all of them add to to the busy handsome skyline that Paisley offers up.
Whether you are planning a visit or just looking for a new vista to take in it's well worth a foray to soak in the view and whittle away some time in relaxation.
If like me you want to know more about the buildings and their history and Paisley on a whole I have posted some links to get you started.
Taking some pretty photographs is recommended as well, please feel free to share!
